Panchakarma
Ayurveda not only stresses on healing but also purification of mind and body. It is science and an art of living healthy lifestyle. Panchakarma is a proper cleansing method belonging to class of cleaning procedure called Shodana under Ayurveda.
Before beginning of cleansing or purification of body, we have to prepare body. This pre-purification method is Purvakarma. The purpose of this stage is to let go of the toxins.
Purvakarma consists of two procedures
Snehan : this particular type of message is done to move the toxins to gastrointestinal area. Also it relieves stress and nourish nervous system.
Svedana : is sweating which is given immediately after Snehan, this is done in order to liquefy toxins.
The procedure of Purvakarma is of 3-7 days. After then Panchkarma procedure is given to individual according to his/her needs.
Panchakarma consists of 5 basic Shodana: Cleansing Methods
Vamana : Emesis Therapy
It is procedure of cleansing by therapeutic vomiting. This eliminates excess mucus present in body in addition to that it often helps in releasing held emotions inside of an individual. Once the mucus is released the individual will feel relieved. After Vamana congestion will disappear and sinuses will be clear.
Resting, fasting, and not suppressing any natural urges like urination, sneezing, coughing etc. is recommended.
Virechan : Purgation Therapy
When excess bile, gets accumulated in the gall bladder, liver and small intestine. It results in skin problems like rashes, inflammation etc. and episodes of chronic fever. In this therapy purgatives are administered into the body which helps in relieving from bile disturbance.
When purgatives are used, the patient should remain abstinence from the food which causes disturbance in balance of three humors.
Basti : Enema Therapy
Ayurvedic Basti (Enema) is introduction of liquid herbal preparation and sesame oil into the rectum. This process relieves from problem such as constipation, chronic fever, cold, sexual disorders, heart pain, backaches, kidney stones.
Nasya : Nasal Administration
Nasal administration is called Nasya. The life force enters through nose by air that we breath. This life force is known as Prana. That is responsible for mental activities, concentration and memory.
In this procedure finger is dipped in ghee and inserted into the nose to massage inner walls. This will result in release of emotions and eyesight will also improve.
Rakht Moksha : Purification/Cleansing of Blood
Toxins present in gastrointestinal tract will get absorbed by blood. When this impure blood gets circulated it becomes main cause for repeated infections, scabies, chronic itching or hives. In these conditions apart from medicines Rakhta Moksha also becomes necessary.
This process involves extracting of some blood from veins. Toxins producing substances such as alcohol, marijuana, sour tasting foods should be avoided.
